Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Thanks to Susan, for hosting Metamorphosis Monday, at Between Naps on the Porch.  I literally just walked in the door from a 10 day trip to my hometown in New Jersey so this will be short and sweet.  I don't recommend putting together a blog post after a 16 hour drive but here goes!

My house doesn't have a powder room.  I am not complaining because it does have 3 full baths!  This really works out great when we have guests but I still wanted to do something to one of them to make it special.  I told you in a previous post that our painter owed us a favor and painted this bathroom and the lanai ceiling in Aqua Mist.  There are no windows in the room so I wanted something light and bright.  The vanity is cherry like our kitchen cabinets with ivory solid surface counter and an ivory sink.  I'm not crazy about the brushed nickel light fixture but it will do for now.  What really bothered me was the frameless builder grade mirror!  Luckily the builder never glued it to the wall.  It was only held in place with those little plastic clips and it weighs a ton.  Good thing it didn't fall on anyone.  This is what we were left with after my husband removed it.

Please excuse the tools!

I hit the stores and looked on line for a new mirror after promising my husband that this was going to be a very inexpensive makeover!  Well, I kept my promise after finding a great deal at Ross.  It was probably the largest size that would fit in the space and the brushed silver border made it unique.  The best part?  Under $17!  It's even beveled!  It opens up the narrow room nicely.

Pretty border (it's carved wood that's been painted, I think?)

I "shopped" my house for some accessories.

The little shelf, the keys, the candlestick and the filigree thing are all from Ross.  I painted the fake apple silver for another project.  The bird is from a store here in Florida (Dockside or something like that), the little brown bird is from a store in Tampa called Robyn's Story Design and the picture frame is from Dollar Tree.  The adorable children in the picture are mine from a beach trip to Cape May, NJ in 1991.

Tip:  Robyn Story Designs is an Annie Sloan Chalk Paint retailer.  She holds classes to teach you how to use it.  Even if you just drop in, she loves to tell you all about it, show you examples and her enthusiasm for it is contagious.  Her showroom is beautiful and I can't wait to visit again.

I found these at Goodwill and they still had price stickers on them.

The real color of this room is somewhere between the two colors in this picture.  This was such an easy, inexpensive change.  Another way to go would have been to frame the existing mirror but you just can't beat $17!  I'm not done with this room yet.  I have fabric to make a shower curtain.  Look for the completed room next week!   Be sure to visit my sister Elaine at her blog, Creating Wonderful Spaces.  I'm still looking for suggestions on how to make the shower curtain so feel free to comment!

I am also linking to Debbiedoo's Newbie Party!  Come visit there too!

I can't even picture where that bathroom is in your house! It turned out great! I look for mirrors everywhere I go and I can never find one I like for under $40, even at Goodwill. Love the finish on it, too! Can't wait to see the whole project done. :)

$17 for that awesome mirror?! WOW! It looks great in your bathroom, and the accessories you've added to the vanity complement it so nicely.

I can't believe you purchased the mirror for almost nothing. It's beautiful. I also like your compliments. I'm a new follower, drop by when you have a chance.

Forgot to mention in my earlier comment - yes, the hardwood floor in my dining room has inlay. The husband in the couple that had the house built lays hardwood for a living, and the inlay is his handiwork.
